Mike Sweeney has created artworks in a variety of media since his introduction during college to the concerns and languages of a diverse art world. Mike received his M.F.A. in Painting, Printmaking, and Installation from the University of Connecticut.
At mid-career, Mike continues to pursue an interest in the dialogue between concept, subject, and material through his works in paper, felt, wood, and found materials. He approaches each piece and each exhibition as an opportunity to examine how aspects of everyday life in the U.S. bump up against each other materially, socially, and culturally. Mike appreciates that each intersection of materials and images can be understood through different viewer frameworks and points of view both within and outside of his country of origin. He develops each piece and display with an awareness that discussion and reflection are more important than any didactic message.
